Sometimes, the HDMI display stays black at system startup.
If you are sure the system is running, you may start blindly playing some sound and the screen should change to normal.
If you don't know, use SysRq 'x' (press Alt-SysRq and then Alt-x). This toggles the HDMI transmission from HDMI to DVI. In DVI mode, you have no sound. If you play something, the HDMI mode should work again and you may switch back with the SysRq 'x'. Note also that the HDMI mode may imply video overscan. Switching to DVI may give you a normal screen (no lost pixels).
